hotel recommendation in NYC?

I’m going over to Manhattan for the IORG meeting. I’d love a recommendation for a place to stay. My favorite hotels are small boutique places — I have a strong dislike for the huge chains, and I’ll pick a safe hostel over a hilton. The conference is midtown (30 W 44th Street), so anywhere within walking or cab distance from there would be ideal.

  1. I’ve enjoyed my stays at The Muse, which is very close to that location.

When we were there last September, we stayed at the Hotel Belle Claire:

It was pretty good, reasonable rates for Manhatten I guess, and there’s a great burger / pizza place right on the corner called Big Nick’s.

I stayed at the Chelsea Lodge a few years back – it was clean, quiet, and quirky in layout (shower in the room, WC in the hall). http://www.chelsealodge.com/

  4. The Club Quarters midtown, if you can get a room, is cheap, boutiquey, and fits your bill perfectly.

You could try the Gerswhin hotel, that’s the one I always pick when i’m in the big apple.

I can’t suggest any specific place, but I suggest starting with Quickbook.com — it has discount offers from a lot of small boutique hotels in NYC. You can then get reviews from newyork.citysearch.com and yelp.com/nyc as well as other sites.
